Rods&Cones

Get Started

Project Overview

To improve the user experience of Rods & Cones onboarding process, making this more succinct & easy for customers to get set up, so that they can become engaged & loyal to the product, with trustability engrained from the offset.

When starting the project in 2021, customers were frustrated, the adoption rate was low which was also resulting in a high abandonment rate.

The Rods&Cones solution is made up of 6 products in total with hardware and software to consider, 3 of these products are used together for the optimum experience coverage in the OR.

  • The 'visOR- V' - Vusix smart glasses with R&C software.

  • The 'visOR-I' - Vusiix smart glasses with R&C software ( earlier edition )

  • The 'mirrOR' - video convertor & samsung galaxy smartphone with R&C software

  • The 'panOR' & 'pod'- Samsung Galaxy & 'pivo pod' 360 rotating camera, with R&C software

  • The 'Remote Expert' - software allowing users to access the OR remotely in real time.

Project Requirements

  • Create product user guides considering hardware & software for 5 products

  • Styling & art direction

  • Production - Product shoots

  • Wireframing (Lo-Fi, Mid-Fi, Hi-Fi)

  • Wordpress

Identifying the different user levels perspectives: Healthcare Professional (HCP,) Channel Admin, Channel Manager & Viewer only. Each can access with different permissions & visibility & be linked to more than one hospital or company. Example: Surgeon can be part of Johnson&Johnson as well as Medtronic, for data privacy user will need to log in & out of different company levels.

Defining the Problem

Challenge: Making the onboarding process as simple & easy to understand as possible across multiple languages.
Problem Statement: For medics & people in the field or training students, Rods & Cones allows for a sharing of knowledge without location being an issue, solving any global mobility challenge, especially during these Covid-19 times which has been a catalyst for the adoption of the glasses by medics and hospitals all over.
Hypotheses: We will know this to be true when we see positive reviews & feedback from the users who had no problems getting set up themselves or with their colleagues & continue using the smart glasses as well as less CS help tickets for onboarding.

Research

During the research phase I performed a deep dive into start up guides of products technical & non technical e.g. Ikea, DJI & Oculus to name but a few! I also performed testing on the existing guides and analysed the emotional journey of the current Rods&cones user. I accessed the Customer Service inbox and performed searches on the tickets to pull together any customer issues with getting started. I performed a number of interviews with customers like Johnson&Johnson & Medtronic to fully understand their current problems with getting started with the products amongst their teams. I mapped all the findings as a start point to fully understand the problems faced.

Inspiration & Idea Development

Looking at guides that are easy to follow e.g Ikea or more technical products quick start guides like DJI, Oculus. I looked at the level of detail on these guides and how to simplify.
Style: I had a clear idea in my head what I wanted the guides to look like, taking inspiration from the Oculus Quest 2 onboarding video. Using 3D animation was the initial plan, however after investigating further this is very costly and not within the client's budget.

I tried to recreate this 'clean & sterile' environment using photography on a white infinity backdrop - this proved to be much cheaper and achieved a similar result.

Mid-Fidelity Wireframes

5 User guides were created for each individual product. Below I have shown the midfi & final designs for the Visor -V product, the storyboard below shows the flow, adding progress for the user, clear steps & checks at the bottom of each page.

Retrospective Design - 'the thinky bits'

  • Understanding the variations of persona of our users & their technical ability (surgeons, nurses, medtech sales)

  • 'Operating Room'. lack of wifi access and setting up the products.

  • Low budget - Achieve my vision of a 'futuristic medical' style.

  • Placement - How will these be accessed easily.

  • Marketing site built through Wordpress, 'get started should be available here, considering the limitations here.

  • After doing some user testing, it was clear that customers were getting lost in the setup steps, more hand holding is required and the addition of videos.
